Emergencies

Emergency Planning

Foreword from Chief Executive, Diana Terris

The Civil Contingencies Act 2004 and other legislative requirements place a duty on Warrington Borough Council to ensure that plans and procedures are in place to effectively respond to a major emergency.  The nature and scale of an incident can vary but the overall aim of the council is to protect public health and safety and the environment and to ensure that the impact on our community is kept to a minimum.

In the acute phase of an incident we will support the emergency services by providing assistance and support.  If necessary we will open up our emergency centre to assist with the control and co-ordination of the incident.  During the longer-term recovery phase we will manage the process of restoring normality to the community.

During these most difficult times the support of all staff is vital to ensure that we fulfill our responsibilities to members of the public.  Each directorate has specific roles to carry out and the major emergency plan also identifies individual officer roles.  These staff play a significant part during the management of a major emergency.

To ensure there is a co-ordinated response to an incident we work closely with other responding agencies including the emergency services, the Health Service, voluntary agencies and with regional and central government.  Through this multi agency co-operation we ensure that all plans are synchronised.  Local partner agencies also work together to train staff and test procedures.

By working together as an organisation and with other responding agencies we can face the challenges presented to us and feel confident that Warrington Borough Council will successfully respond to and recover from any major incident.
