Electrical Equipment (the WEEE Directive)

Disposal of electrical and electronic equipment

WEEE is waste electronic and electrical equipment like TVs, fridges and computers. It is one of the fastest growing waste streams in Europe. Every year in the UK, households throw away around 1 million tonnes of it.

New regulations came into effect on the 1st July 2007 that are designed to reduce the amount of this type of waste going to landfill. They are designed to make the producers pay for the treatment and recycling end-of-life electrical equipment.

Shops that sell electrical products must either offer in-store take-back or be part of the Distributor Take-back scheme.

Warrington Borough Council provides the facilities for the collection of WEEE products through its Community Recycling Centres.

There are five main categories for collection of household WEEE at our Community Recycling Centres:

Large household appliances other than cooling appliances – washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers.
(Collection points at Gatewarth & Woolston Community Recycling Centres)

Gas discharge lamps – fluorescent tubes
