Why collect garden waste?
- About 20% of what we throw away is garden waste. Instead of sending this to landfill, it could be composted
- It is vitally important that garden waste is diverted from landfill and used in a way that benefits the environment
- By taking part in the scheme your garden waste will be composted and turned into a useful product used to improve agricultural land
- You will also be helping Warrington to reach our recycling target of over 30%

Using your green bin
- Do not put your garden waste in bags, put it loose in your bin.
- Make sure you do not over fill your green bin. If you can not close the lid, your bin will not be emptied. Excess garden waste can be taken to one of the community recycling centres or you can compost it yourself with a home compost bin
- Your green bin must ONLY be used for garden waste. Your bin will not be emptied if it is contaminated with unacceptable materials and it will be your responsibility to remove contamination from the bin before it is emptied.
- On collection days please leave your bin on the edge of your property before 6:30am. Please take care not to cause an obstruction.
- We recommend that you put your green bin out for collection every two weeks in the summer as garden waste rots more quickly in warmer weather.

What can I put in my green bin?
Grass cuttings, hedge clippings, garden prunings, twigs & small branches, weeds, plants, dead flowers / house plants, leaves and bark.
What materials must not be placed in my green bin?
Household & kitchen waste, soil, stones, rubble, turf & ash, pet bedding / straw, dog & cat faeces, plant pots and plastic bags, large branches, wood and cardboard.
Can I put my garden waste in bags before I put it in the green bin?
No, the garden waste must be loose in the green bin. Bags will contaminate the garden waste and your green bin will not be emptied.
When will my green bin be emptied?
Your green bin will be emptied every two weeks, please refer to your calendar for your collection dates.
Where should I put my green bin for collection?
Place your green bin at the edge of your property in the same place as your grey-wheeled bin before 6.30am on your green bin collection day. Please take care not to cause an obstruction.
What do I do if I currently have an assisted collection for refuse?
If you are currently receiving help with your refuse bin, then you will also receive help with your green bin.
What happens to the garden waste after it is collected?
It is sent to a nearby composting facility to be recycled into a soil improver.
What if I have excess garden waste; can I leave it in bags next to my green bin on collection days?
Only garden waste put in your green bin will be collected. If you can, store the excess garden waste and put it in your green bin for your next collection. Alternatively, you can take your excess garden waste to the facilities at the community recycling centres or you could use a home composter.
Unfortunately not at this time as all available bins have been allocated.
What if I put materials in my bin that are not acceptable?
It is essential that the garden waste we collect from your bin is free from contaminants, so unfortunately your bin will not be emptied.
Remove the contaminated material from your green bin and ring Contact Warrington on 01925 443322 to arrange a collection.
Why have I not been offered the garden waste service?
In the future we hope to provide this service to all suitable properties. At this time we are providing bins to those areas where the majority of properties have gardens and have the room to store an additional bin. Eventually we hope to provide the service to as many properties as we can.
What if I do not want to be part of this new service?
We would ask you to try this service for a few weeks to help prevent garden waste from going to landfill but if you still feel you can not take part please call Contact Warrington on 01925 443322.
What should I do if my green bin goes missing?
Please call Contact Warrington on 01925 443322.
