Green Waste

Green WasteThis is waste from the kitchen and garden, for example, raw fruit and vegetable peelings, grass cuttings, hedge trimmings and dead flowers. Green waste taken to landfill takes up a huge amount of space and when it breaks down or rots it releases methane, a greenhouse gas.

Most people can find space in their own garden for a composter and recycle their green waste at home. The compost can then be used on the garden to improve the soil condition and provide a nutrient rich food for plants.

FlowersThe Landfill Directive requires that the UK divert 75% of the 1995 levels of biodegradable waste from landfill by 2010. Householders can help the Government reach these targets by composting at home or by using the facilities at the Recycling and Household Waste Centres.

Please view the composting page to find out more about composting.
