Plastics

Plastic1Over the past 50 years the generation of plastic has increased enormously from approximately 150,000 thousands tonnes in the 1950s to 2.5 million tonnes in the 1990s (UK).

Plastic is made from oil which is a non-renewable resource. Eventually this resource will run out. Plastic that ends up in landfill will not break down and it is a material which is very difficult to recycle as there are so many different types (50 different kinds), most of which require a different recycling process and therefore must be collected separately.

Plastic2Always try and re-use plastic before recycling, for example, re-use your carrier bags when returning to the supermarket and refuse extra carrier if you do not need them.

We should try and reduce the amount of plastic that we buy, for example, buying products using alternative packaging like glass. When we do buy plastic we buy recycled products, such as recycled bin liners. This way we can all do our bit to reduce the amount of plastic being generated and ending up in landfill.
