Textiles
It is estimated that some 650,000 tonnes of textiles are generated each year, with approximately 200,000 being re-used or recycled. Charity shops will be happy to take your unwanted textiles and shoes. You can also use the textile and shoe recycling containers at your local recycling site ![]()
What happens to your unwanted textiles and shoes? Textiles collected from households are separated, some will be re-used as clothing whilst others will be recycled for other uses.
Approximately - 70% will be used as second hand goods both in the UK and the developing countries; 7% becomes wiping cloths for industry; 9% will become filling material (e.g. for mattresses and insulation); 8% is used in the fibre reclamation industry and 6% is waste (zips etc).
