It should be no surprise that Warrington is at the heart of the nation's communications system. From the time King Henry VII opened a three arched stone bridge across the Mersey in 1495 the town has been acquiring a transport network that would do credit to a great metropolis. River, canals, railways and motorways all converge to place the historic town at the very crossroads of Britain. And with Warrington only a short drive from the busy international terminals of Manchester and Liverpool airports, accessibility is global. The town's national importance as a communications hub was further strengthened with the opening in 1974-75 of the M62 and M56, both of which bisect the borough boundaries. These north-south, east-west links are replicated on the railway network by the West Coast Main Line and the trans-Pennine routes giving Warrington an unrivalled 'staging post' status on the EU's newly designated Atlantic trade corridor, which stretches from Ireland across northern England to northern Europe. Further strengthening of the town's regional 'hub' is now complete with the construction of the new Junction 8 on the M62.
