History of the Mayor

 

William BeaumontThe first Mayor of Warrington, William Beamont was born in Warrington in 1797.  He was educated at the Boteler Grammar School and Chester. Founded the firm of Beamont, Urmson and Davies in the Market Place next to the Barley Mow. It was said that a pint of the best ale brewed in the town that day would be found on his desk! After the incorporation of the Borough in 1847, he became the town’s first Mayor, and later an Alderman. 

He laid the foundation stone of the Museum and Library in 1855 and was the author of many books and pamphlets connected with the area.  

William Beamont lived for a time at Rock Villas on the corner of Fairfield Road and later moved to Orford Hall.  

He died in 1889 aged 92 and was buried at Christ Church, Padgate.
