What do Adult and Children’s Social Services do?

Adult and Children’s Social Services gives advice and arranges practical help and support to thousands of individuals and families in Warrington. We work in partnership with many other organisations, such as health and the voluntary sector, to make sure that you receive appropriate care, protection and support. This means working closely with you to find out what help you need and arranging appropriate services.

What sort of information does Adult and Children’s Social Services hold?

Information about people that we help includes basic information such your name, address and next of kin. We also hold information such as:

  • Contacts we have had with you 
  • What needs you have 
  • What care you receive 
  • Other relevant information e.g. from people who help care for you

We collect information to help us to work with you and to understand and plan the services you need.

What is the information used for?

The information we receive may be used in a number of ways such as:

  • Helping to work out and plan the services you need 
  • Telling the people who provide the services about your needs 
  • Checking the cost and quality of care you receive and looking at any concerns you may have 
  • To help us plan and develop our services for the future

The information we have about you may be written down in what we call manual records or may be held on a computer – electronic records.

Do Adult and Children’s Social Services keep my information confidential?

We do not share your personal information with anyone else unless you say we can. The only exception would be where the law says we should – such as court proceedings, to prevent crime or where the health and safety of someone is at risk (e.g. the protection of a child).

We will explain to you why we need to share your information and ask you to show your agreement by signing a declaration on our forms. The declaration will say that you agree to the information being held, used and processed by Warrington Borough Council in order to arrange your care and for legal purposes of the council. You also agree that the information may be shared with other agencies on your behalf and that details will be held on our database.

Why do Adult and Children’s Social Services need to share information with others?

You may receive care from different individuals and organisations, not just Adult and Children’s Social Services. To make sure that we all work together for your benefit, we may have to share some information. However, we will only share what others need to know so that they can provide you with appropriate services and even then, only when you have said we can.

Any statistical information that we use would not be able to identify you. If there was any chance of it doing so we would ask your permission before passing it onto to anyone else.

Who might Adult and Children’s Social Services share information with?

It could be our partners such as the Health Service, education or housing services, or it could be other organisations in the voluntary or private sectors who are involved in providing your care.

Will the people Adult and Children’s Social Services share information with keep it confidential?

Yes. The law says that Adult and Children’s Social Services and everyone working with Adult and Children’s Social Services must keep personal information confidential.
