What is the School Health Service?
The school health service works with children, their parents and teachers to detect health and social problems and to help children develop a healthy lifestyle. The service aims to promote the health of school age children so that they can enjoy and benefit from their education.
Who runs the School Health Service?
This is provided by the Warrington Community NHS Trust.
What services does it provide?
The school health service helps to:
- Keep your child healthy and happy by working together with families, teachers and the community health team
- Organise appropriate health checks to identify any problems early
- Arrange further help from other specialist agencies if needed
- Complete your child’s immunisation programme
- Support teachers in providing health education within the national curriculum
- Provide a link between home and school identifying any particular needs of children with special needs in mainstream schools
- Provide medical/health advice to parents/carers or individual children about any aspects of "growing up" or any health problems, which may affect their schooling.
Who can use the service?
The service is available to all school age children and their families living in or attending school in the Warrington Borough Council area.
Where is it available?
You can access the service either from your child’s school or at you local Health centre/Clinic.
Check with your child’s school which clinic looks after your child. A list of clinics and contact numbers can be found on the NHS' website.
Who does what?
Each school has a named school health adviser, a school paediatrician and a school health clerk.
The School Health Adviser is qualified nurse, who visits schools on a regular basis and is the link person between school, home and the health service.
The School Paediatrician is a fully qualified doctor who specialises in childhood health and illness. He/she will see any child whenever there is a need to do so.
The School Health Clerk looks after the school health records and organises appointments.
How do I get in touch with someone from the service?
Ask at your local school for a leaflet about the service. This will tell you which is your local clinic. Your child’s school should be able to arrange for you to meet the appropriate person if you have any concerns.
My child has a medical condition – can the service help?
