Battery recycling

battery4Why recycle batteries?

In the UK we throw away over 600 million batteries every year. By recycling your batteries you can make a positive difference and help reduce the amount of battery waste being disposed of in landfill sites.

Batteries contain various hazardous metals such as lead, mercury, cadium, manganese and lithium and it can be damaging to the environment when they are buried in landfill.

How do I recycle old batteries?

You can recycle your used batteries at the following locations:

Community recycling centres (CRCs) at Gatewarth, Woolston or Stockton Heath

Contact Warrington, Horsemarket Street, Warrington

Burtonwood Library, Chapel Lane   Stockton Heath Library, Alexandra Park

Penketh Library, Honiton Way   Warringotn Library, Museum Street

Lymm Library, Davies Way   Padgate Library, Insall Road

Birchwood Library, Brock Road   Culcheth Library, Warrington Rd

  • Collect your free battery storage bag the next time you are visiting one of these sites or email nsdwasteteam@warrington.gov.uk to get one through the post.
  • When your bag is full take it to one of the sites and empty it into the battery recycling container – then re-use your bag to store more old batteries.

NEW - Battery recycling regulations came into force on the 1 Feb 2010 requiring all shops selling more than 32 Kg of batteries a year to take back waste portable batteries for free to be recycled. Therefore collection points can now be found at most supermarkets or shops that sell large amounts of batteries.

What types of batteries can be collected for recycling?

Most types of batteries can be collected including:

  • All AAA and AA cells
  • Sizes C and D
  • Button batteries  (e.g. watch batteries)
  • Mobile phone batteries
  • Laptop batteries

It does not matter if the batteries are full, partially used or out of date. We can also accept rechargeable batteries.

Car batteries must be recycled separately, there are facilities on the CRCs for these.

What happens to the batteries once collected?

Batteries are taken to a recycling centre in the UK and then sorted into batches based on the chemical content of the battery. After sorting, the waste batteries are reprocessed to produce other products or even new batteries.
