Reducing our carbon footprint

As a council we have shown our commitment to climate change by signing the Nottingham Declaration, this pledges our commitment to meeting the government's emissions targets and developing our own actions towards combating climate change.

NI 186 "per capita CO2 emissions in the local authority area", NI 188 "Planning to adapt to climate change" and NI 192 "Percentage of household waste sent for reuse, recycling and composting" feature in our local area agreement priority indicators. The council has a commitment and specific targets to work to in these areas.

We want a reduction of the councils greenhouse gas emissions of 10% by 2012 with a baseline of our 2006 levels. We would like a reduction in our community emissions of 20% by 2020 with 2006 levels as a baseline. You can read more about this in our climate change strategy and the climate change presentation which was given when we launched our commitment in 2007.

Our carbon footprint

Footprint06

Footprint08

The 2008 carbon footprint is slightly greater than 2006. As you can see overall it has increased in total by 140 tonnes per year. This is mainly due to an increase in energy demand due to the inclusion of traffic lights and road signs within our 2008 footprint.  We have been working hard to carry out the actions in our strategy, since its launch in December 2007, and we are confident that we will start to see reductions as we move towards achieving our targets.

We already have a number of eco champions in place to help us to reduce our emissions and we are working closely with the Energy Savings Trust via their support programme. We will also be applying for government funding to help us to carry out improvements to our buildings as energy consumption is our largest source of emissions.
