Home energy efficiency

What is energy efficiency?

Energy efficiency is about minimising the amount of energy we use in our day to day activities without changing our life style dramatically. There are many ways in which to change energy, which can save us money as well as protect the environment and preserve our natural resources. Many of these measures are low cost/no cost, however some require a financial investment.

Why should we do this?

An energy efficient home not only saves on fuel bills, our homes will be warmer and we will contribute to the protection of the environment.

What should I be doing?

There are many ways in which we can be more energy efficient. Simply being conscious of the amount of energy we are using makes a large difference to our overall consumption. Basic measures such as ensuring all lights are switched off on leaving a room, only boiling the water we need in the kettle and ensuring electrical equipment is not left on standby overnight saves a massive amount of energy over the course of a year, preserving the environment and saving us money. Other measures range from the simple installation of a rainwater butt to specialist technology such as new insulation techniques and heating domestic hot water from sunlight. The more familiar measures are cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, draft exclusion and upgrading and improving your heating system and controls.
