Proud pupils
The pupils of Bruche Community Primary School ‘display considerable loyalty and support to the school, the staff and the new headteacher’.
That is just one of the many positive comments made in the school’s recent OFSTED monitoring inspection, the second since the school became subject to special measures in September 2007.
The inspectors praised the new Head teacher Miss Lynne Mullen for making ‘a significant and positive impact’ on the school. They commented that she had ‘acquired a thorough and accurate understanding of the school’s situation and taken decisive action to quicken the pace of improvement’.
The improvement in ‘the quality of teaching and learning’ was singled out as good, with teachers being confident in their lesson planning and classroom management. The introduction of a ‘Bruche’ model for lessons has been introduced and has proved successful in achieving a ‘consistent approach’ to teaching.
Pupils have responded well to the new model and are ‘keen to get into their classes punctually in the mornings’ and were happy with the new rules ‘because everyone understands what is expected of them’. Pupils told inspectors that they enjoyed ‘being recognised and rewarded for good behaviour and work’.
The school will be focusing on making improvements in the following areas as highlighted in the report:
Improve standards and achievement in English and mathematics, particularly in the proportion of pupils who are capable of reaching the highest levels.
Further develop assessment and target setting systems so that they are used consistently across the school and contribute to raising standards.
Build on improvements being made to the quality of teaching and learning so that a higher proportion of lessons are good or better.
Develop the skills of middle leaders to monitor, evaluate and improve their areas of responsibility.
Miss Lynne Mullen, Head Teacher said,
"I feel privileged to have joined Bruche, where it is clear that parents, governors and staff take school improvement seriously. We are very proud of our achievements so far, as highlighted in the report.
"The teachers and children have worked hard to address the points raised in the original inspection. The children are what makes this school so special and they have responded well to our new initiatives. Most of all we are proud of what they have achieved, and look forward to future achievements with a renewed sense of expectation. "
Mrs Rosemary Panting, Chair of Governors said,
"I am very pleased with this report as it reflects the hard work and commitment of all in the school and gives people in the area a school they can both entrust their children to and be rightly proud of."
