Select Leisure recycling success

SELECT Leisure centres are leading the way in the campaign to increase recycling and reduce the carbon footprint of Warrington.

Since January 2007, the service has been committed to recycling plastic and cardboard alongside more easily recycled products such as paper and ink cartridges.

Each centre offers several recycling points and to date over 80,000 plastic bottles have been recycled at a combined weight of 3120kg – bottles which would have previously gone to landfill.

If we were to place these bottles end to end they would stand over twice the height of Mount Everest.

The service also operates a Healthy Green Reward Scheme where loyalty points are given to anyone who gets to the centre without the use of a motor vehicle.

Cllr Bob Barr, Executive Board member for planning & regeneration, says: “The council’s leisure service has clearly been at the forefront of energy initiatives and takes very seriously its part in reducing the borough's carbon footprint.”
