Olympic flame burns brightly in Warrington

TOP athletes from around the world may descend on Warrington ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Three venues in the borough have been included in a directory of training camps which will be offered to competing Olympic teams to prepare for a variety of sports ahead of the games in London.

Olympics bosses have chosen Halliwell Jones Stadium as a practice venue for football, Birchwood Leisure & Tennis Complex is included for indoor volleyball, while Victoria Park will feature for athletics training.

The decision was announced earlier today by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG).

Cllr Roy Smith, Executive Board member for community services, said: “This is great news and is a glowing endorsement of the top-class sports facilities we have on offer across the borough.

“I can assure all Olympic athletes that they are guaranteed a very warm welcome throughout their stay in Warrington.”
