Saving energy

BROOMFIELDS Leisure Centre is a top performer when it comes to saving energy.

The centre has just received a Combined Heat and Power Carbon Saving Certificate for 2007 from the Carbon Trust.

This is in recognition of the systems staff have put in place which help reduce carbon emissions from the centre. This includes following legislation and guidance on saving energy in relation to pool/plant operations and introducing recycling schemes involving customers.

They have saved 14 tonnes of Co2 in the past year – that’s the equivalent of 2168 mature trees!

The certification demonstrates the council’s long term commitment to the environment in terms of lower energy costs and reducing the carbon footprint and to its customers.

All Select Leisure centres are constantly working towards reducing the amount of energy used and support recycling initiatives.

Their objectives are to

• provide a blueprint for good practice and a consistent approach across all centres with regard to energy and efficiency and recycling.

• support the council’s commitment to energy and efficiency and recycling and work with the council’s energy officer

• attain funding to implement energy related schemes

• maintain best practice within the leisure services.

Cllr Brian Axcell, Executive Board member for Environment Services, says: “The Combined Heat and Power Plant at Broomfields Leisure Centre is a real state-of-the-art piece of equipment.  The staff at Broomfields have shown just how much energy can be saved and emissions reduced when best practice is followed.”
