Trees and Woodland

Introduction
Trees and woodlands are a fundamental part of Warrington's environment. They embody the principals of sustainability and biodiversity. Warrington Borough Council looks after the trees and woodlands in the Borough and is constantly striving to make these better.

The Importance of Trees and Woodlands
Trees are an essential part of nature's life support system; without them life on earth would not be possible. Until recently the value of trees was generally measured in timber value or in assessments of their individual beauty and contribution to the landscape. Now we know that trees bring a large number of benefits to the environment and directly to people's everyday lives.

Some of the benefits are:

  • Creating attractive landscapes contributing to the quality of people's lives and their sense of well being.
  • Releasing oxygen for us to breathe.
  • Helping to clean the air by collecting dust particles and absorbing gaseous pollutants
  • Providing habitats for a wide range of wildlife and contribute to biodiversity.
  • Screening unsightly views and providing shelter from strong winds and sunshine.
  • Reducing noise levels
  • Absorbing carbon dioxide thus helping to stabilise global warming
  • Contributing towards creating a less stressful environment leading to improvements in peoples overall health.
  • Helping to raise property values.
  • Creating an attractive environment favourable for economic development.
  • Creating opportunities to bring communities together and build civic pride.

Management of Trees and Woodlands in Warrington
Warrington Borough Council is responsible for managing trees on highways, in Borough Council housing areas, in parks, in some key woodland sites and much of the young woodland in the newer parts of town.
