All about parking fines
Who sets parking fines and will they go up on a regular basis?
Parking fines are set and reviewed by the Secretary of State for Transport to ensure that they remain fair. This does not mean that they will constantly be going up. The level of the fine needs to be high enough to deter drivers from contravening the parking restrictions, but it still has to be fair.
How much will the new fines be and what happens if I don't pay?
The fines are set at two levels a higher level contravention, £70 and a lower level contravention, £50 to try to discourage people from doing it again. If the appellant pays within 14 days the amounts are reduced by 50%. If the fine is not paid after 28 days a "Notice to Owner" form will be sent to the address of the registered keeper of the vehicle. This will explain in detail what action you must take next to avoid the fine increasing further.

What can I do if I think the PCN (parking ticket) was issued unfairly?
Firstly, don't ignore it as it won't go away. You will need to write to the address shown on the PCN, within 14 days of receiving it, saying why you think it was unfair. Your arguments will be considered and you will receive a response. If we believe the ticket was issued for valid reasons but you remain unhappy with the decision, you may have the right to appeal to an independent adjudication body (Traffic penalty tribunal). We can tell you whom to contact if you want to do this.
