New traffic schemes - What's planned and what's happening

20mph pilot speed limit scheme

Warrington Borough Council is implementing a pilot study to examine the effectiveness and benefits of a 20mph speed limit on certain roads, and also to determine whether the speed limit works without the use of traffic calming measures, e.g. speed bumps.

Information about traffic calming in Payne Close and Reaper Close.

There are three areas of the borough which have been chosen for various reasons:

  1. Town centre (with the aim of encouraging more sustainable commuting practices, such as using public transport or walking)
  2. Park Road, Great Sankey (due to the number of cyclist casualties)
  3. Orford area - to include Long Lane, Orford Green and Northway (due to the high number of vulnerable road user casualties).

A 20mph speed limit creates a safer environment for cycling and walking and will reduce the severity of injuries if a collision occurs.

This pilot scheme will run for 18 months from February 2009 and if successful will be introduced to other areas of the town.

Old Liverpool Road / Liverpool Road and Barnard Street / Forrest Way - Traffic management initiatives

Following various concerns relating to the current traffic conditions experienced by local residents on the above roads, the council has been asked to review the current traffic management systems in place. The council is taking this opportunity to obtain the views of the local community on a series of traffic management proposals designed to address the concerns raised. A public meeting was held on 25 September 2009 at Sankey Bridges Community House. Those unable to attend the meeting can view the plans here, here and here. It should be noted that the plans are subject to minor amendments, however they have been agreed in principal.

What happens next
In order to progress the matter further, the necessary legal documentation (associated with establishing pedestrian crossings and the introduction of waiting restrictions, etc) has been programmed to be undertaken in November 2009. Subject to the receipt and resolution of any objections, the measures are expected to be brought in from March / April 2010.
