Review of Provision for Children and Young People with Special and Additional Educational Needs

The provision and support for children with special educational needs was reviewed and improved quite soon after we became a unitary authority. There was recognition by Members and officers that we wanted to do the best that we could for the young people who had additional needs in Warrington.

We wanted to promote an inclusive education service that sought to educate children in their local school where possible, whilst ensuring that the alternative special schools were providing a good education.

The support and opportunities available to children and young people have changed and improved over the years as has the legal framework and guidance from the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). A further review in 2002 saw developments that reflected the position at that time.

Now with changes to Children’s Services, and in the light of Every Child Matters, the time is right to have another review of provision to make sure that we can move forward with confidence for the next period of time.

We hope that you will contribute to this review so that all opinions and views can be included. That way we will produce an action plan that will build on the many good things happening in Warrington and will lead to further improvement. Further details about how you can contribute to this process can be found in the document.
