Making a Submission to STAG

The Statutory Assessment Advisory Group (STAG) makes recommendations to the local authority about statutory assessments for children with special needs. Its recommendations are based on information given in the submissions it receives.

All submissions sent to the Statutory Assessment Advisory Group (STAG) should be clear, easy to read and written on one side only of A4 size paper.

The STAG dates also show submission dates.  These are two weeks before the next STAG meeting. This is so that there is time for all the group members to receive and read the papers before the meeting at which the case will be discussed. All submissions must arrive by 4pm on the submission date.

Submissions from Warrington Schools
A school will usually make a formal request for a statutory assessment after it has tried to improve the child’s situation but there has been no real difference.  The school completes a form, giving details of the child’s needs, how the school tried to meet these and what the results are. It will send with the form any reports or assessments by professionals, and must include the signed consent of at least one person who has legal responsibility for the child.

Submissions from Warrington parents
Parents have the right to ask for a statutory assessment. However, if a school believes that a statutory assessment is needed, it has a professional duty to ask for this and would not leave parents to do so. As a result, most requests come from schools.

If parents let us know they want a statutory assessment for their child, we ask them to complete a parental submission. When they are putting the submission together, we ask them to include as much evidence as they can.
