Special Educational Needs points for parents
These are some of the key points for you as a parent or carer.
- “Special educational needs” has a legal definition.
- Children with special educational needs all have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than most children of the same age. These children may need extra or different help from that given to other children of the same age.
- Remember – you know your child better than anyone else.
- If you have any worries you should get advice straight away.
- If your child is not yet at school or going to an early education setting, talk to your doctor or health visitor.
- If your child is at school or going to an early years setting you should talk to your child’s class teacher first.
- You may also ask to speak to the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) who has responsibility for co-ordinating help for children with special educational needs.
- You may decide to go to the head teacher.
- Working together with your child’s teachers will often help to sort out worries and problems.
