Support in School for Children with Special Educational Needs
Parents or carers of a child with special educational needs can expect support from the child’s school.
- Your child’s school has to provide help for children with special educational needs.
- Your child’s class or form teacher is likely to be the first person in school to see that your child is having difficulties. The teacher should discuss this with you, and you should both agree what the school will do to help.
- The school will review your child’s progress regularly and should involve you in this.
- If school still feels your child is not making good progress then your child’s class/form teacher will work with the special needs co-ordinator (SENCo) and identify what school should do next.
- Your child might have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which sets out targets for your child.
- If school feels more help is needed then a specialist teacher or educational psychologist might be called in who will advise the school or assess your child.
- You can expect to be involved at all stages.
