Warrington Educational Support Team

 

The Warrington Educational Support Team (WEST) is a team of specialist teachers who provide advice, assessment and some teaching support to primary schools. We help schools to make the most of learning opportunities for children with learning difficulties and to meet their development needs. 

Other team members work on behalf of children from Foundation to Key Stage 4.

  • The Learning Consultant for Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) supports children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs for ASD by supporting colleagues in school
  • The ICT specialist teacher supports children with complex and physical difficulties, who would benefit from the use of Information and Communication Technology by supporting colleagues in school
  • The Adviser for Special Educational Needs promotes inclusion by supporting Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCos) and other colleagues in schools and elsewhere.   

What we do
 We encourage Warrington schools to take a positive and inclusive approach to teaching children with learning difficulties, and we provide training and support for school staff. This includes whole school training on how to identify children who are at risk of underachieving, and training for SENCos. We also provide training for Teaching Assistants and for Special Educational Needs Governors.

We help schools to plan how they will support and develop children on School Action Plus (see: Special Educational Needs Code of Practice) and children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs.

We provide advice and evidence to Warrington Borough Council, as part of the statutory assessment process.

How the Warrington Educational Support Team works with schools
 WEST teachers are allocated to schools. We negotiate at planning meetings with the school how our sessions will be used so that the needs of the school and its pupils are best met.
