Childcare for Children with Additional Needs
From September 2002, the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) states that it is unlawful to discriminate against disabled children in any service. The two main duties are:
- Not to treat a disabled child 'less favourably'
- To make 'reasonable adjustments' for disabled children
This applies to all childcare settings: mainstream, special, private, voluntary and independent, and also to individual childminders and Education and Social Care, whether or not they are in receipt of government funding.
Warrington’s Children’s Services work with children, parents and childcare providers to identify, assess and respond to children’s additional needs and to ensure appropriate inclusion within childcare provision.
Warrington Families Information Service (FIS) will always try to find childcare that meets parental requests as closely as possible.
Support and advice for childcare providers
Childcare providers can access advice and support from the Childcare Team Early Years Foundation Stage Consultants, the Inclusion Officer or The Early Years SEN Consultant who can all be contacted via the FIS on 01925 443131.
Support will vary according to the child’s needs and may involve input from more than one agency.
Warrington’s Children’s Services will work with childcare providers to help them enable all children to reach their full potential.
