Adopting from Abroad
Adopting a child from abroad is not an easy option. It is not as simple as travelling overseas, adopting a child and bringing them back as your own.
There are some basic facts that families wanting to adopt from abroad should consider:
- Any background and health information about their child is likely to be incomplete or unreliable
- Changing political situations in foreign countries increase the difficulties of inter-country adoption. Countries may open or close adoption traffic without notice
- Adopting a child from overseas can take much longer than a UK adoption
- It is an expensive process - costs can range from £12,000 up to around £30,000. This includes charges for assessment and training, legal fees, travel, accommodation and foreign agency fees. There may be other costs depending on the particular country
Children from abroad will need an enormous amount of help and understanding from sensitive and patient adoptive parents:
- To enable the child to develop self-esteem and pride, you must incorporate into your lifestyle elements of the child's original culture, including friendships with people of the child's ethnicity
- You must prepare the child for potential prejudice arising from their race, religion or cultural identity
Many families report, however, that embracing another culture is one of the unanticipated joys of inter-country adoption.
