Who are the Children who need Adoptive Families?
Most children needing a new family will have been in foster care before being placed for adoption. It is very rare that children are given up for adoption by their parents.
Children needing adoptive families come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have different needs and experiences:
- Some children will have suffered abuse or neglect
- Almost all of them will have experienced separation, placement moves and uncertainty
- Their behaviour can be challenging and their overall development can often be quite delayed because of their experiences
These children often have knowledge of their birth families and life experiences that they bring in to the placement. This must be accepted, nurtured and valued by their new family.
Sometimes there is uncertainty about a child’s past and their true parentage. Therefore, there may be unknown heredity issues which may only surface in later years.
Prioritisation
Warrington currently prioritises potential adopters who can consider:
- Children of school age
- Brothers and sisters who need to stay together
- Disabled children of all ages
- Babies and children who have health problems or whose future development is unclear
- Babies and children from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Our aim is to find families for the Warrington children who are waiting to be adopted, so naturally we give priority to people who are able to consider these children.
It is our policy to place children with adopters who share the same or very similar ethnic background, culture, race, language and religion.
