Duke of Edinburgh's Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is for young people aged 14 to 25. It creates the opportunity to experience new challenges and adventures, gain new skills and make new friends.
It is voluntary and non-competitive and is available to all young people regardless of ability.
The three levels of award:
- Bronze Award – for those aged 14 and over. It consists of expeditions, skills, physical recreation and service. This is usually completed in six to 12 months.
- Silver Award – for those aged 15 and over. It consists of expeditions, skills, physical recreation and service. This is usually completed in 12 to 18 months.
- Gold Award – for those aged 16 and over. It consists of expeditions, skills, physical recreation, service and a five-day residential project. This is usually completed in 18 to 24 months.
The sections:
- Expeditions – training for, planning and completing a journey as part of a team. This can take place in the countryside or on water, either by foot, by horse, by bicycle, in a canoe or on a boat.
- Skills – learning how to do almost any hobby, skill or interest.
- Physical recreation – learning a sport, dance or fitness activity
- Service – helping people in the community
- Residential project – at least a five-day stay at a residential facility completing different activities with other people.
Costs
There is a small entry fee and some activities will have to be paid for by the young person. The Local Authority should be able to help but a good idea is to arrange a sponsorship.
