Duke of Edinburgh's Award in Warrington
Warrington Youth Service is the Operating Authority for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Warrington.
Award Leaders and volunteers deliver the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme to young people in Warrington who can register for the programme in schools, colleges, youth clubs or Open Award Units.
Open Award Units
Open Award Units are run by Warrington Youth Service staff and volunteers to provide young people with the opportunity to participate in the Award outside of schools, colleges and youth clubs. All Open Award groups allow young people to complete their Gold, Silver and/or Bronze Awards and they run on various nights throughout the week. Contact the Youth Service for details of days, times and venues.
Current Award projects
Currently, Award participants are involved in several projects that are contributing towards part of their Award programme.
- A group of young people are applying for a grant from the Youth Opportunity Fund to renovate part of an existing Youth Centre into the Warrington Duke of Edinburgh’s Award central base. The young people are working together to design the interior of the building, which they will use as part of their Skills Section.
- A group of Gold Award participants are preparing to host a visit from a group of Gambian participants in 2008. In 2006, the Warrington group spent three weeks in The Gambia, West Africa, completing the Residential section of their Award. They spent 18 months preparing for the visit and raising money for transport, accommodation and food. The fundraising contributed to the Service section of their Award and in all, they raised £20,000. They wrote to several organisations to apply for funding; took part in sponsored walks, bike rides and supermarket bag packing; and hosted quiz nights, dance events and stalls at local village fetes. The money also enabled them to build part of a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award centre in The Gambia.
Access Organisations
Local organisations can become a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award ‘Access Organisation’ if they provide an activity for young people which is recognised within one of the sections of the Award.
If a young person takes part in an activity provided by an Access Organisation, they can gain a ‘credit note’ or ‘certificate of prior learning’ and the Access Organisation can then put them in touch with the local Award Unit so they can complete the rest of the Award programme.
