The UK Youth Parliament and Warrington Youth Parliament:
“The UK Youth Parliament aims to give young people a voice which will be heard and listened to by local and national government, providers of service for young people and other agencies who have an interest in the views and needs of young people.”
The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) allows young people aged 11 to 18 to have a say on national issues that affect them. The group holds a sitting every year.
It is made up of about 400 Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs), each representing around 10,000 young people.
UKYP in Warrington
In Warrington we elect two members, one for North Warrington and one for South Warrington, plus two Deputy Members of Youth Parliament (DYMPs).
Any young person in Warrington can run for the position of member or deputy member and they last for one year. Elections take place every February and candidates are usually recruited through schools, colleges, youth projects, youth organisations and Connexions.
Warrington MYP duties
The Members of Youth Parliament representing Warrington must attend local IMPACT (the Warrington Youth Forum) meetings, regional North West MYP Group meetings and the national UKYP Annual Sitting in July.
Support from the youth service
The Warrington Youth Service has supported the UK Youth Parliament since 2002, representing Warrington Borough Council, organising local elections and offering support to the young members.
The youth service also offers the Members of Youth Parliament opportunities such as shadowing their local MP, meeting with government ministers and campaigning on particular issues.
