The Tourism (Sleeping Accommodation Price Display) Order 1977 requires price displays for sleeping accommodation in hotels. A legible notice must be displayed prominently in the reception area or, if there isn't one, at the entrance where it can be easily read by a prospective customer. The notice should give the highest and lowest nightly charges for the following:
- a bedroom for occupation by one adult
- a bedroom for occupation by two adults
- a bed for an adult in any other situation, stating whether it is in a dormitory or in a room to be shared with other guests.
VAT, if payable, must be included in the price or shown separately in monetary terms with equal prominence.
If any meals are compulsory, the price must be stated to be inclusive and the meals identified.
What is the penalty for non-compliance?
The penalty, if found guilty of non-compliance, is a fine of up to £200 for summary conviction.
