Proposed Statement of Special Educational Needs (SEN)

When you receive the proposed statement of special educational needs you have 15 days to make any comments or queries. If the local authority does not hear from you within this time the statement will become final without you having a chance to make any changes.

Read the proposed statement carefully.  You should be able to recognise your child as the one described.

The statement is set out in six parts:

  • PART 1 – gives personal details of you and your child and tells you who has given written advice
  • PART 2 – gives background information and describes your child’s learning difficulties and special educational needs. You should be able to recognise some of the advice that you gave in here
  • PART 3 – this is in three sections a), b) and c)...
    a) sets out the long term targets that your child is aiming for. Once these are met your child may no longer need the statement
    b) gives details of the special provision needed to help your child to make progress and achieve the targets in 3a
    c) this describes how your child’s progress and the statement itself will be monitored and reviewed
  • PART 4 – this will be empty on the proposed but on the final statement it will usually name the specific school that your child should go to. It will at least describe the type of school she/he needs
  • PART 5 – describes any non-educational needs that have been identified during the statutory assessment  process. This may need support from health or social care or other agencies
  • PART 6 – will describe how the other agencies mentioned above will support your child

If you are happy with the proposed statement just sign and return the form that came with it. If you have any queries, use a pencil to mark anything you want to query – especially any factual mistakes (such as spellings or dates). Ring the SEN  case worker, whose name was given to you during the assessment.

Often, small problems can be dealt with very quickly. If the queries are greater you may be asked to meet with the SEN case worker to discuss your concerns. The local authority is keen to hear your views and will take account of them wherever possible. Once the local authority has made all the changes it can the statement will be finalised.
