After school clubs, link clubs, holiday clubs and breakfast clubs are also known as 'out of school services'.

They are mainly for children aged 4 to 12. 

There are three services available:

• Breakfast clubs are open in the morning before school starts.  Children can have their breakfast here.
• After school clubs are open in the afternoons and after school until 6pm.
• Holiday clubs are open during most school holidays between about 8am and 6pm.        

At these clubs, children can learn and have fun together.

Prices

On average, after school clubs cost about £8.70 per session and holiday clubs cost about £22.20 per day.

Safety checks

Only clubs that care for children under the age of eight must be registered with Ofsted, who will…

• Check to make sure the staff are suitable to work with children.
• Check to make sure the premises is safe and secure.        

Staff

At least half the staff must be trained to work with children and there must be a certain number of staff working at the club depending on how many children are there.  Contact us to find out details about this.

Choosing an out of school service

You can ask to see their registration certificate and the report of their last inspection.  You should also visit the club with your child…

• Are you made welcome?
• Are the children calm, safe and happy?
• Are the staff listening to the children and answering them carefully?
• Are staff friendly and proud of the care they offer?
• Are staff joining in with what the children are doing?
• Are there plenty of clean toys and equipment for the children to play with?
• Are the premises clean, well kept, secure and safe?
• Are there plenty of activities to help children learn and play?
• Are the children involved in planning the activities?
• What are the procedures for fire drills and medical emergencies?
• Do the staff listen to what you want for your child?
