Becoming a registered childminder

How to become a registered childminder

To be registered as a childminder for children aged under 8 years old you must meet the requirements of the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).  Ofsted is responsible for registering and inspecting childminders to make sure they meet these requirements.  The EYFS pack is available on the website – see link at the bottom of this page.

New childminders must complete introductory training in childminding, pass a paediatric first aid course and hold the level 2 food safety award.  All childminders must have an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau disclosure, a health check and be insured.  Childminders must have a sufficient grasp of English to ensure the well-being of children in their care.

An Ofsted inspector will visit you to make sure that you are suitable to care for children, that your home is a safe, child-friendly place and that you meet the requirements of the EYFS.

To begin the registration process you will need to attend a childminding pre-registration briefing session where you will find out more about becoming a childminder and how to apply for registration with Ofsted.  To find out when the next session is and for further information, contact the Families Information Service 01925 443131.

Childminding offers opportunities to develop your career and further training for childminders is available through the childcare team professional development programme.  There is also a Childminder Development Officer who can provide support and advice to all childminders in Warrington.
