Fostering support and financial allowances

What support will I receive?

We know that caring for someone else’s child or children can be a demanding job and that’s why we offer a wide range of support aimed to help fostering families to provide a high standard of care to fostered children:

  • Every carer has their own supervising social worker, who visits on a regular basis offering supervision, advice and guidance
  • We are committed to the personal development of all carers and offer a comprehensive training programme in a wide range of child related subjects
  • Carers have access to a range of specialist support
  • The fostering team regularly organise social events, support groups and fun activities for all carers and their families, including a monthly coffee morning, a summer 'day out', a Christmas party, an annual celebratory event and a trip to the local pantomime
  • We have two people carriers for foster carers to use, free of charge, for days out or for holidays - we can also help with driving lessons for foster carers who don’t drive
  • All new carers are linked to a ‘buddy’ (an experienced carer) who will offer practical advice and non emergency support
  • All carers have access to an out-of-hours support service
  • We provide equipment for your home such as cots, stair gates, if needed, and can supply special equipment for some children and young people, such as computers
  • All foster carers are offered membership with the Fostering Network - a national organisation which provides specialist support to foster carers including legal services, training and reading materials.
  • Regular updates keeping you informed of what’s happening in the Fostering Service and National changes in fostering
  • Referral reward service – foster carers are rewarded in recommending their friends and family once they are approved as carers

Allowances

We believe in and value our foster carers and the work they do in improving the lives of our children in care.  That’s why from April 2012, we are increasing our allowances to foster carers to a very competitive rate.  We will be able to publish this rate very soon, but in the meantime, watch this space!
