The duty to promote disability equality came into force on 4 December 2006 as part of the Disability Discrimination Act.
All public authorities, including secondary schools, primary schools, special schools and pupil referral units are required to produce and publish a Disability Equality Scheme which should aim to improve the equality of opportunity for disabled people.
Schools are required to publish their Disability Equality Scheme as a separate document or as part of another document (i.e. school improvement plan) and should be available on the schools website or as a printed document. The Disability Equality Scheme should be reviewed annually and renewed every three years.
