If the court decides that a young offender must pay a fine, his or her financial situation will be taken into account. Young offenders will therefore need to be able to give details of their income to their solicitor or to the court.
Young offenders who are aged 16 or over and who have their own income are responsible for payment of any fines, however if the young offender is under 16, the responsibility for payment of fines rests with his or her parents or guardian.
If a young offender does receive a financial penalty in court, which they or their family are genuinely unable to pay, the Youth Offending Team is committed to exploring options which prevent custodial sentences.
