Home Energy Efficiency & Sustainability for High Schools

Following the popularity of the Warrington Watt Watchers programme, a new presentation has been designed for students at KS3.  This brings together the importance of energy conservation, how our lifestyle has affected the rest of the world and how new technology to create green energy is becoming increasingly more urgent.

Home Energy Efficiency

The one hour presentation is mainly student led asking them to question established ideas, and follows the discussion path of topics raised, supporting and broadening the students’ views by means of a PowerPoint presentation.

Topics covered will include:

  • insulation
  • fossil fuels
  • global warming
  • global dimming

Have the true effects of global warming been stunted and can this be supported by the recent revelation of the effects that global dimming can have?

Do we measure the subsequent cost in lives of those who have become a tragic consequence of our striving to create, what we perceive to be, a modern lifestyle?

Sustainability

This section of the discussion carries on from energy efficiency and expands onto sustainable energy.  As residents of a planet with diminishing resources, green energy is very topical and we have a moral obligation to develop such technologies for use in domestic and business premises if we wish to maintain our current standard of living and allow those in less advanced societies to aspire to our lifestyle.

Exploring the various types of sustainable energy, students will be invited to raise their ideas on how best to utilise new technology as well as looking at tried and tested methods.

An introduction to the FITS (Feed in Tariffs) initiative demonstrates how by using PV (Photovoltaic) panels it is possible to generate a reasonable financial return in today’s economic downturn and also provide free electricity for the home owner or business.
