Hazardous waste is any waste classified as such by the European Waste Catalogue. Any business producing hazardous waste must ensure it is disposed of properly and in most circumstances that they are registered with the Environment Agency as a hazardous waste producer.
The European Waste Catalogue classifies waste materials and categorises them according to what they are and how they were produced.
Warrington Borough Council is only allowed to collect: Mixed Municipal Waste (20 03 01) through its trade waste collections.
This is defined as - 'solid waste that has not been sorted into specific categories (such as plastic, glass etc), waste which, because of its nature or composition is similar to waste from households'.
You are required to check that non of the waste that you place in your trade bin does not fall out of the Mixed Municipal Waste (20 03 01) category. You can check using the European Waste Catalogue document - see link below.
Examples of items not covered by this category and are hazardous wastes include:
- fluorescent tubes, aerosols and paint in original containers
- lead acid batteries, contaminated spills and rags, oil and fuel filters and tyres
- laser print cartridges and ink jet cartridges.

Any waste classed as hazardous waste must be disposed though a registered hazardous waste carrier. All business are legally responsible for making sure your waste is handled and disposed of properly.
