New building regulations to improve electrical safety in the home came into force on 1 January 2005
Each year in the UK on average 10 people die and about 750 are seriously injured in accidents involving unsafe electrical installations in their home. The new regulations aim to reduce this risk by bringing electrical safety in the home within the scope of the building regulations for the first time.
Minor jobs like replacing sockets and light switches will not be affected but anyone thinking of, for example, adding new circuits to their house needs to get advice from the council’s Building Control team or arrange for a qualified electrician to carry out the work.
