Warrington Freewheeling – FREE adult cycle training
If you don't cycle and want to learn all the right skills, or are returning to cycling and want to brush-up on your technique then this FREE training is just up your street.
Warrington Borough Council has teamed up with Bikeright to offer free cycle training to anyone over 16 who lives, works or studies in the borough.
During the training you will:
- Have the choice between three levels from basic to advanced, as well as learn to ride sessions
- Discover how to deal with busy traffic
- Learn about road positioning and how to be seen by other traffic
- Find great cycling routes for your everyday journeys
- Get tips for riding at night-time or in bad weather
- Learn all about safety, clothing and other equipment
- Pick-up maintenance tips
- Gain knowledge from cycling professionals
The courses are based upon the National Standards for cycle training which are split in to three easy to understand levels each with clear aims and outcomes.
Learn to Ride
for those who are currently unable to ride a bike but are keen to learn. So you may have never learnt to ride as a child or have not ridden a bike for many years. These sessions are run in very small groups or one-to-one to give you the personal attention needed to get you riding.
Level 1 techniques and skills
Level 1 courses are for those who can ride a bike but are not very confident about cycling. Level 1 courses are delivered in a safe traffic free environment.

- Starting off and stopping
- Staying upright without wobbling
- Pedalling
- Steering and maintaining forward progress
- Cycling one handed/signalling
- Looking behind
- Use of gears
Level 2 techniques and skills
Level 2 is for those who have cycled for a while and want to develop new skills or for those who are returning to cycling after some time. This training is delivered on quiet roads with some traffic.
- All level 1 skills
- Theory of on road cycling
- Getting on and off the bicycle and starting off
- Stopping
- Use of gears
- Cycling one handed/signalling
- Looking behind
- Turning right, left and overtaking parked vehicles on a variety of quiet roads
- Using cycling facilities
Level 3 techniques and skills
Level 3 is for cyclists who want to hone their skills and develop specific techniques for tackling busy urban ares with a view to commuting by bicycle. Level 3 is delivered on busy urban roads with complex junctions on a one to one basis.
