There are 154 licensed Hackney vehicles within the borough. In the main, these operate from ranks within the town centre – or can be ‘hailed' in the street. The vast majority of them are black or white saloon cars with a roof mounted taxi ‘sign’. The others are ‘London’ style cabs (any colour), or van conversions.  

There are also about 403 private hire vehicles, which must be pre-booked through a private hire operator. Most of these are listed in the Yellow Pages. Do not use one of these vehicles without pre booking it – you will not be covered by insurance.
