Warrington catches Olympic fever!

Published Wednesday, 29th August 2012

LiveWire’s six leisure centres across the borough have all experienced a noticeable clamour for Olympic sports over the last six weeks.

Livewire logoOn Thursday 31 May the Olympic Torch Relay passed through the town, signalling the start of the local countdown to the London 2012 Olympic Games.  Tens of thousands of residents lined the damp streets and entered into the spirit of the Games.

The town’s new leisure and lifestyle trust, LiveWire, is making every effort to meet this demand and encourage even more people in Warrington to get fit and active:

  • Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub

This summer the new £32 million hub is continuously reaching its maximum capacity for swimming sessions in both pools.  Additional badminton and volleyball sessions are now being scheduled in due to huge increase in demand.

  • Great Sankey Leisure Centre

Daily bookings for badminton and spinning have increased in the past two weeks by 20% and 30% respectively on comparable weeks.  The centre also re-opened its gymnastics waiting list at the end of July and there are now over 300 budding Beth Tweddles on it!

  • Culcheth Leisure Centre

Badminton usage at Culcheth has increased by 48% from the start of July to mid-August against the same period in 2011. The centre has also been receiving regular enquires about table tennis which have been accommodated.

  • Broomfields Leisure Centre

Junior swimming has reached its highest take up in the last two years and bookings for gymnastics courses have gone through the roof with the largest increase being in 3-5 years.  All classes are now full with a waiting list of over 100 and growing.

  • Birchwood Leisure and Tennis Centre

There has been a 30% increase in outdoor tennis bookings and spinning classes have also increased by 20%.

  • Woolston Neighbourhood Hub

The hub has seen a dramatic increase in swimming and fitness suite use by juniors since the start of the Olympics.

Jan Souness, managing director of LiveWire Warrington said: "We hope that the successes of Team GB will encourage everyone to take advantage of all the exciting sporting and physical provisions available across our LiveWire sites.  There has been a noticeable rise in demand for Olympic sports in the area over the last four to six weeks which is fantastic, but we want even more people in the town to get fit, healthy and active which is why we’re putting on a try an Olympic sport for free day on Sunday 2 September.  We’ll also be trialling 6am gym openings in September in response to requests from regular users.”
