Blue bin recycling scheme

 bin2

It is now over one year since the bigger blue bin scheme was introduced and over the last 12 months the amount of recyclable waste collected has rocketed!

Since its start residents have recycled over 20,000 tonnes of waste that would otherwise have gone to landfill, which is a huge environmental saving and a great achievement - a big thanks to everyone!

Frequently asked questions

What happens to the recyclables?

After collection the materials are taken to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) located in Widnes.

At the MRF the material is loaded onto conveyor belt for sorting. This is done using a variety of specialist machinery inculding magnets and air jets. Once the materials are sorted into their different types they are bailed and sent off to be recycled into ne witems and products.

Please follow link to see animated video about how waste is sorted for recycling at a MRF

Can we recycle tin foil and foil containers in the new blue bin?

Not at this time but they can be recycled in any of the can banks on the bring recycling sites and the three community recycling centres situated throughout the borough.

Can we recycle batteries and tetra pak cartons in the new blue bin?

We are unable to accept these two waste types at this time but we hope to accept them sometime in the future with other materials. They can be recycled on any of the three community recycling centres.

Is it essential to crush cans and plastic bottles?

It is not essential, we recommend that cans and bottles are crushed when possible just to save space in your blue bin between collections.

Can we recycle shredded paper in the new blue bin?

Due to the change in service we will not be able to accept shredded paper in the new blue bin. Extra collection containers on the three community recycling centres will be provided for the recycling of shredded paper.
