If you want more nappies in the pack, you pay any additional costs.
Nappy laundry service
If you want to use cotton nappies, but don't want the extra washing, using a nappy laundry service may be the option for you.
How does is work?
Your prefold nappies are loaned to you by the nappy laundry service. Once a week the nappy laundry service will deliver a supply of freshly laundered nappies to the door and take away the dirty nappies to be professionally laundered.
As part of Warrington's nappy incentive scheme, the council will fund the registration cost for the laundry service.
This includes the prefold nappies, outer wraps, liners, storage bin and deodoriser and the first four weeks of the service for free.
Please note that incentive schemes are only available to residents of Warrington.
For more information about Warrington's cotton nappy incentive schemes please call Jo Petty on 01925 442604 or email jpetty@warrington.gov.uk.
Why use cotton nappies?
Many families don't realise that there is a good alternative to disposable nappies that have a range of health, cost and environmental benefits.
|
Waste and the environment
- Disposable nappies take over 500 years to decompose in landfill sites. Cotton nappies produce virtually no waste as they can be washed and used again and again.
- Seven million trees are used each year in the manufacture of disposable nappies, and they use significantly more energy, more materials and produce more waste than cotton nappies.
- In households with a baby, disposable nappies can make up half the volume of the weekly bin.
Cost
- Using cotton nappies can save you approximately £500 from birth to potty compared with disposables.
|
- Cotton nappies can be washed and used again and again so if you keep your cotton nappies and save them for your next baby you can save even more money!
Easy to use
- Modern nappies are so easy to use. Many don't rely on folding and they fasten with Velcro and poppers, not pins.
- They have been designed to wash and dry easily, so you can wash them at 60°C.
- They are just as reliable as disposable nappies.
Health
- Cotton nappies are naturally absorbent without relying on chemicals that are used in disposable nappies.
- Babies wearing cotton nappies are generally potty trained 6-12 months earlier than those in disposables.
- Cotton nappies are naturally breathable unlike disposable nappies which become hotter when they are wet.
- Cotton nappies provide more support at the base of the spine so are great for tumbling toddlers. They are also excellent for babies with 'clicky hips' as they are more padded around the leg so promote correct hip alignment.

Getting the right balance
Even using just one cotton nappy each day can make a real difference!
Many parents use a combination of cotton nappies and disposable nappies to suit their needs for example, using cotton nappies at home and disposables when you are out and about.
Whatever balance of cotton nappies and disposables suits you best remember that using just one cotton nappy a day can save 365 disposable nappies from going to landfill in a year.
