The Leader's blog -January 2015

A very happy New Year and welcome to my January blog post.

I’m starting my first post of the year with some exciting news. I’m delighted to tell you that another big name will be taking up residence at the Omega site. Online retailers, The Hut Group, have signed up to a 690,000 sq ft retail, manufacturing and logistics unit. I’m extremely proud to welcome The Hut Group to Warrington and it’s fantastic to see that Omega is filling up fast! We are also working hard to sign up an automotive manufacturing company on Omega South.  More news soon!

I’m also thrilled to tell you that yet another development was given the green light at planning committee at the end of last year. Planning approval was granted for the £52 million Bridge Street Quarter project and once completed, will offer a new market hall, a multiplex cinema, various family friendly restaurants and a new council office building. Work is due to start this year and I’m sure you’re as excited as I am to see the transformation of Warrington’s town centre. The town centre is on the cusp of a renaissance which will bring its vitality back to its former glory.

As you may be aware, the council has recently voted its unanimous opposition to the new road tolls planned for the Mersey bridges at Runcorn. We stand united on this and have appealed to the government to get the toll scrapped. Please be reassured that the council is fighting this on behalf of residents and I have recently written to local businesses for them to support our appeal.

Last month I had the pleasure of being invited along to the Royal Mail delivery office on Milner Street. I saw first-hand the hard work that goes into making sure that all our mail is delivered during the very busy festive season. I was shown around by the manager, Kenny Gibson, who gave me a behind the scenes look into the operation. I also got the chance to chat to some of the postmen who serve our local community and it was lovely to see their passion and dedication.

On a final note, very best wishes for 2015 and I look forward to sharing more good news over the coming year.
