Check your Council Tax band
If you're not sure, search for your council tax band by postcode and address.
How is my band calculated?
Council tax bands are set by the government’s Valuation Office Agency (VOA), not by the council. The bands are based on what a property might have been sold for on 1 April 1991, not on today’s house prices.
Every year, the amount of council tax charged is set by our Full Council, who decide how much the council tax will be for a Band D property in each parish. The amounts charged for the other bands (A-H) are then worked out using a proportion of ‘ninths’:
Challenge your Council Tax band
If you think your band is wrong, you can challenge your council tax band. Challenges are made to the VOA, not to the council.
It doesn’t cost anything to challenge your band. If you want to use an agent to do it on your behalf, make sure you don’t use a fraudulent person or organisation. Find out more about council tax scams.
You can’t challenge the amount of council tax which is charged.
