Winter housing grants

The Warm Home Discount Scheme

Over the winter period you could receive a discount on your electricity bill through the Warm Home Discount Scheme (GOV.UK website).

The discount won’t affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.

You qualify for the discount:

  • If on a predetermined date in July set by the government your supplier was part of the scheme, or
  • your name (or your partner’s) was on the bill and you were getting the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit (even if you get Savings Credit as well)

If you do not qualify some suppliers can offer the discount to vulnerable people (e.g. those on low income).

Each supplier has their own rules about who else (known as the 'border group') can get this help. To find out if you qualify check with your supplier.

Cold weather payments

If you are in receipt of certain benefits, you may be eligible for a Cold Weather Payment (GOV.UK website).

Payments will be made when your local temperature is either recorded as, or forecast to be, an average of zero degrees celsius (or below) over seven consecutive days.

You'll receive a payment of £25 for each seven day period of very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March.

Winter Fuel Payments

You could get between £100 and £300 tax-free to help pay your heating bills if you were born on or before 5 January 1952. This is known as a Winter Fuel Payment (GOV.UK website).

Most payments are made automatically between November and December. You should get your money by Christmas.

You should get a Winter Fuel Payment automatically if you are in receipt of a State Pension or another social security benefit (not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit or Child Benefit).

If you qualify but don’t get paid automatically, you will need to make a claim.
