There are three swing bridges across the Manchester Ship Canal in Warrington; on the A5060 Chester Road, the A49 London Road and the A50 Knutsford Road. The ship canal and shipping movements are the responsibility of Peel Ports.
You can view details of the swing bridge openings [pdf] which shows the number of bridge openings that have occurred during certain hours of the day, and compare it to previous years. We update this every three months.
Sign up for alerts
To help avoid delays and allow you to plan ahead, you can sign up to receive early warnings for when the bridges are about to swing...
If you're on twitter or facebook, follow the dedicated profiles which send an automated warning 25-30 minutes before the swing bridges are due to open:
Alternatively, there's a free app which you can download on your phone to receive alerts:
This app uses information which is sent out from either Latchford Locks or Old Quay ship canal control rooms when a ship is on course to travel through Warrington, giving approximately 25-35 minute advance warning. However the app itself has been developed by an external company and isn't associated with the council, so we can't accept responsibility for the accuracy of its information.
Warning signs on the road
There are also signs on the roads leading towards the swing bridges which light up to make drivers aware that the bridge is open and therefore there will be a delay of around 12-16 minutes. When this happens, help to improve air quality and reduce your fuel emissions by switching off your engine until the traffic starts moving again.
